Business Profile

Aldershaw Handmade Tiles Ltd We at Aldershaw specialise in 'Truly Hand made tiles', for the roof, the wall and Terracotta tiles for the floor.

We have been in existence for many years now, situated in 5 acres of ancient woodland in the heart of the Sussex countryside.

For the majority of our products we use Wadhurst clay from our own clay pit here on site, from which we generate six different colour to match practically anything in the region and provide our customers with a palette from which to create the effect that they require.

Each tile is unique bears the characteristics of the craftsman or woman who made it.

About Us In addition, we buy in a Gault clay to produce the genuine article for the roofs of Cambridgeshire and Ely areas of East Anglia. We are proud to be one of only two companies using Gault clay to provide the authentic article for restoration or new development in sensitive planning areas.

Whilst Aldershaw are not major brickmakers we do manufacture specials, either standard or purpose made and a limited production of Imperial size and 2" bricks together with specialised brick mullion windows air bricks and a host of other products.

Our Services

Sussex Terracotta floor tiles are truly handmade from Wadhurst clays dug here on site in the heart of the Sussex countryside.

These clays have been used to make terracotta articles for over a thousand years and are a familiar building material in the region, the warmth of their colours being a distinctive feature of the landscape.

The claypit yields clays, which readily lend themselves to produce the oranges, yellows and browns which naturally complement each other.

They are used in Sussex Terracotta floors to make a variety of traditional geometric patterns, put together from unglazed tiles of simple regular shapes.

The designs are ideal for kitchens, conservatories fire hearths and patios.Unlike most other floor tiles today which are machine extruded or pressed, Sussex Terracotta tiles are made by hand using a slow but simple process which has been employed in this country since Roman times.

Each tile is struck from a sand covered beech-wood mould, dried on a wooden bat and then fired to well over 1,000 degrees C
The finished tiles are not absolutely uniform, like machine made tiles, but vary slightly in shape, size and shade, so much sorting and matching is done to get the desired results. We take this much care over all of our various tiles. To view our full range, please visit our website or call on 01424 756777.
